Research topics to date have focused on the following promising material systems:
- lead-free transparent and photovoltaic piezoelectric systems (with a particular focus on ZnO and KNN systems)
- fiber-optic sensors in fiber composites
- biomaterials
- functional surfaces
- nanocomposites
- new carbon modifications (graphene, helicoids, catenoids)
- CNT-based fibers
- Self-healing structures
- Photronic© materials (“Adaptronics with photons”)
- Diamond-based high-load ceramics
- Nanostructured actuators
- Additive manufacturing processes
- Self-organized shaping processes
Research projects on campus
Even the first joint research projects demonstrate how attractive research topics can be successfully tackled collaboratively, going beyond the implementation of new research concepts and the establishment of new research priorities at the participating institutions. The Functional Materials and Structures Campus will serve as the foundation for bringing together the individual areas of expertise. Among the first research projects are:
- Lead-free transparent ceramics made from laser-sintered microspheres
- Multifunctional windows with self-cleaning properties, transparent photovoltaics, and active sound insulation using transparent piezoelectric zinc oxide
